Kang Kang
My name is Kang Wol Kang and I live in Phoenix, AZ. I was born in South Sudan, and my
family and I came to the United States when I was six. Being in a new place was tough but
my family and I had a dream for a better life. It was really hard for the first couple of years
with a household of seven and we were barely making it by, but we did it.
School life in the beginning was so hard because it was a totally different environment
from what I had known. I struggled in school until I met my foster parents, who got me
the help I needed to succeed. I was able to participate in the Boy Scouts as well. For
over four years, we met every week and had outings and one or two volunteer projects
each month. My favorite volunteer project was when I got to paint a Batman Cave for
Make A Wish. In May 2018, I graduated from Sunnyslope High School.
I became passionate about coding when I started to wonder how the games I like to play
really work. I realized that I wanted to be a videogame designer and have a career path
that I would love. I got the opportunity to pursue my goal when I found out about Codefy
from my case manager. I was accepted into the program through a nonprofit organization,
Chicanos Por La Causa. I am so grateful that I get the chance to follow my dreams, and I
hope to thrive and be successful.
